WEST CAPE YORK MOTHERSHIP QLD, AUSTRALIA

Situated at the northern most tip of Australia, Cape York is still relatively unknown in the saltwater fly fishing world. This won’t last for long. With diverse habitats, a myriad of species eager to eat a fly and very little angling pressure Cape York is quickly being recognized as one of the best saltwater destinations in the world.

Over the course of a week, anglers can expect an extraordinary diversity of species and habitats. Just off the flats pelagic species such as tuna can be seen crushing bait. Deep in the mangrove lined rivers barramundi, mangrove jacks, indo-pacific tarpon and many others wait to ambush prey. However, it is the flats fishing that stands apart. This region offers the best opportunities in the world to catch Anak permit, one of the “big four” permit species as well as Blue Bastards, a species of sweetlips endemic to Australia. Large golden trevally, queenfish and cobia can also be sight fished on the extensive beachside and river mouth flats.

Aussie Fly Fisher’s is at the forefront of exploring this vast fishery and launched an incredible mothership program in 2024. I was fortunate to join them for two weeks in 2025 and I will continue to visit this fishery for at least one week per year for the foreseeable future, it is that good. I would love for you to join us for a true adventure into one of the world’s most remote and unspoiled fly-fishing destinations.
