From January through early April, there’s nowhere on earth I’d rather be than the rivers of the north Oregon coast. These are the waters where I first learned to swing a fly, growing up on Portland’s westside. Everything about them whispers winter steelhead—emerald green flows framed by hemlock, cedar, salmonberry, and ferns beneath a restless coastal sky. Out there, anticipation builds with every cast, waiting for the heavy pull of a fish built for winter. Heavy sink tips, big flies, and rain gear that can take a beating define the season, while tides, hydrographs, and the precision of each swing matter more than most realize. In the end, winter steelheading is all about the details.

WINTER STEELHEAD DAY TRIPS
With five rivers less than an hour from Tillamook, this area is the ideal base for winter steelhead fishing on the Oregon coast. Weather, river flows, and tide cycles are key factors in choosing the best option each day, so final river selection is often made the morning of your trip. Booking multiple days not only increases your chances of ideal conditions, but also allows you to experience the variety of water the north coast has to offer. Most importantly, it maximizes your opportunity to connect with a fresh, hard-fighting winter steelhead. Meeting time and location will be confirmed as your trip date approaches.
